THE EAGLE WAS BUILT AND LAUNCHED IN HAMBURG GERMANY IN 1936 AS THE TRAINING SHIP HORST WESSEL. ADOLF HILTER WAS PRESENT AT HER COMMISSIONING CEREMONY. THE NEXT SHIP BUILT AT THAT HAMBURG SHIPYARD, WAS THE BATTLESHIP BISMARK. AS A TRAINING SHIP FOR GERMAN NAVY OFFICERS, SHE WENT ON SEVERAL CRUSIES PRIOR TO THE START OF WWII. HITLER SAILED ON HER IN 1938. SHE SERVED AS A DOCKED TRAINING SHIP UNTIL 1942, WHEN SHE WAS ARMED AND RETURNED TO SAIL TRAINING IN THE BALTIC SEA. IN APRIL 1945, THE GERMAN CREW SAILED HER TO THE NEAREST BRITISH PORT AND SURRENDERED. IN 1946, THE ALLIED NAVIES DREW LOTS FOR THE WESSEL AND THREE OTHER SIMILAR SAILING SHIPS AND THE UNITED STATES WON THE WESSEL. THE COAST GUARD REQUESTED HER FOR USE AS THEIR TRAINING SHIP AND IN JUNE 1946, A COAST GUARD CREW ALONG WITH THE GERMAN CREW THAT HAD SURRENDERED HER SAILED THE SHIP FROM BREMMERHAVEN, GERMANY TO NEW YORK. AFTER LEAVING OFF THE GERMAN CREW, THE COASTIES SAILED TO THE COAST GUARD ACADEMY AT NEW LONDON, CONNECTICUT. THE EAGLE HAS BEEN PROVIDING SAIL TRAINING TO FUTURE COAST GUARD OFFICERS FOR NEARLY 70 YEARS. HER STEEL HULL; 22,000 SQUARE FEET OF SAIL AND 5 MILES OF RIGGING REPRESENT THE PERFECTION OF SAILING SHIP DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGY.
