NEWPORT, RHODE ISLAND THE PATHFINDER WAS BUILT IN BOSTON, MA. IN 1843; HER HOME PORT WAS NEWPORT, RHODE ISLAND. SHE HAD A 44 YEAR CAREER WORKING IN THE WATERS OFF NEWPORT AS A PILOT BOAT AND A FISHING BOAT. ON MARCH 14, 1853, WHILE WORKING AS A PILOT BOAT AT THE ENTRANCE TO NARRAGANSETT BAY, SHE RAN AGROUND JUST NORTH OF THE BEAVER TAIL LIGHT. SHE WAS PULLED OFF AND REPAIRED. IN OCTOBER 1865, THE PATHFINDER AND TWO OTHER PILOT SCHOONERS PARTED THEIR MOORINGS DURING A WINTER GALE AND WERE BLOWN ASHORE IN NEWPORT HARBOR. SHE WAS AGAIN REPAIRED. ON MARCH 5, 1872 THE PATHFINDER WAS SOLD AT AUCTION AND BEGAN A NEW CAREER AS A FISHING BOAT. DURING THE NIGHT OF AUGUST 18, 1879, THE PATHFINDER AND TWO OTHER FISHING SCHOONERS AND TWO YACHTS WENT ASHORE ON GOOSEBERRY ISLAND DURING A SUMMER STORM. THEY WERE ALL DECLARED TOTAL WRECKS, HOWEVER THE PATHFINDER WAS PULLED OFF AND REBUILT. FOR THE NEXT FEW YEARS SHE CARRIED A VARIETY OF CARGOS, MOSTLY RELATED TO THE FISHING INDUSTRY. ON MARCH 30, 1887 THE PATHFINDER DEPARTED NEW BEDFORD, MA. BOUND FOR BLOCK ISLAND, ON WHAT WOULD BE HER FINAL VOYAGE. AT 3:00AM ON APRIL 1ST HER CREW WAS STRUGGLING IN A HIGH SEA AND SNOW STORM TO PREVENT THE SHIP FROM GOING ASHORE ON THE BREAKWATER OUTSIDE OLD HARBOR AT BLOCK ISLAND. THE LIFE SAVING CREW FROM THE NEW SHOREHAM LIFE SAVING STATION TOOK OFF THE CREW AND THEN TRIED TO SAVE THE SHIP, BUT THEY WERE FORCED TO ABANDON THE PATHFINDER WHEN HER ANCHOR CHAINS PARTED. THE SHIP WAS TOTALLY WRECKED ON THE ROCKS. THE DRAWING OF THE PATHFINDER IS DONE ON A 1971 TRAINING CHART AND FRAMED IN CABINET DOORS PURCHASED FROM A MARINE SALVAGE AND CONSIGNMENT STORE IN WICKFORD, RHODE ISLAND.
