I am self-taught, I’ve been drawing ships on charts since 1968 and I’ve developed my own pen & ink style, layering thousands of loose and tight pen strokes. I use a technical drawing pen with a point diameter of thirteen thousandths of an inch; slightly larger than a human hair. An average sized drawing will have more than 25,000 individual pen strokes.
I’ve studied the history, design and construction of sailing ships and sailed on many working ships; all of my drawings are done free hand; their proportions are calculated in my head based on my understanding of ships – an understanding that can’t be taught; only learned.
All of the drawings are based on actual ships; I find their stories hidden away in libraries, archives and museums. After nearly 5 decades of research; I have hundreds of untold stories that make my drawings one of a kind.
IF YOU HAVE A SPECIFIC SHIP OR SHIPWRECK IN MIND OR IF YOU WOULD LIKE ME TO FIND AN INTERESTING STORY TO PLACE ON A CHART - CONTACT ME. I ALSO DO MODERN NAVAL AND COMMERCIAL SHIPS AND AIRCRAFT.
