Marcella Packard

  1. A photograph of Mount Mayon, Phillipines, with the ruins of Cagsawa belltower in the foreground

Two of my ancestors came to this country on the Mayflower and many more on the ships that followed. There have been many artists and craftsmen in my family, most recently my Great Grandmother who painted delicate water color landscapes, my Grandfather who had a gallery in Rockport, Massachusetts and painted seascapes. My uncle lived the artist’s life in Key West, where he had a gallery on Duval Street. Many of his murals decorate the restored deco hotels along South Beach Boulevard in Miami Beach.

My mother, Marcella Stevens Packard learned oil painting while living in South Dakota, where my father was stationed at a remote Air Force radar site. In 1964, he retired and they moved to New Orleans and in the spring of 1965, she began working on Jackson Square in the French Quarter. Every morning she packed up her easel and paintings and spent the day in her “spot” on the sidewalk around the square.

In 1968, she and my father found an apartment in the French Quarter and opened a studio and gallery on Dumaine Street; where she worked for the next 25 years. She found her subjects in the French Quarter and the plantations along the Mississippi River in Louisiana, but she loved the old steamboats and that’s what she became known for. Walt Disney owned one of her steamboat paintings. Paul Newman spent time in the gallery while filming a movie in the French Quarter and Helen Hayes was a friend and admirer of her work. When her eyes became too weak to paint the detailed work she liked, she retired and closed the gallery. She passed away in 2011.

After the gallery closed, I stored the remaining stock of her prints and the original oil paintings they were printed from. The prints survived the flood waters of Hurricane Katrina by mere inches. The original paintings remain in our family. Her lithograph prints of steamboats and French Quarter scenes are available exclusively on my website.
